Italian Pasta Tips and Information

                              Pasta Types

Italian pastaItalian Pasta is made in many different sizes and shapes. Spaghetti  is a traditional favorite but it's not the only pasta made on earth. Here you can learn more about different pastas and how to enjoy them.

As you may know, most brands of pastas are made from durum wheat and mixed with water. Better tasting pastas are made from seminola flour or durham seminola as compared to durham flour only.   Package labels provide such  information.

Of course, Italian pastas in different shapes or thickness don't have  the same texture and taste either.   Therefore, spaghetti, macaroni, penne, rigatoni, fettucine, and many other shapes will  influence your  taste senses.

How Popular are Pastas in America?

According to a recent survey 84% consider pastas to be a healthy food and more people are eating more today than 5 years ago. If sampling surveys are applied to United States population, 75-80 million Americans eat pasta regularly.

Who Makes the Best Pasta?

Pastas originated in Italy during Roman times and not in China as the rumor goes. Supposedly, Marco Polo brought the idea from China in the middle 1200's. Historical facts don't support this rumor. Here is a summary of dates for historical purposes.

1st Century B.C. A Roman presented the first pasta based recipe for " laguana."
1000 AD Organized production of pastas began in Italy in the region of Campania, Italy.
1279 First written reference in a citizen's will in Genoa, Italy.
1295 Marco Polo brought in pastas from China.
1348-1353 Maccheroni was officially declared in Italy as a refined delicacy.
Note:  This information has been obtained from Barilla, Italy's #1 Pastas, at their website www.barilla.com.

Significant commercial production of Italian pastas showed large increases in production in Italy during  the 1800's. It was found that some areas in Italy had favorable temperature changes and the right type of climate to properly dry the pastas dough for shaping and cutting.

Pastas, especially spaghetti, began as a popular Italian dish in America in the early 1900's as large numbers of Italians immigrated to United States and brought their traditions for their tasteful Italian foods with them.

They purchased increasing quantities of pastas from their local stores to replace home-made pastas, and introduced their love for pasta to others with family recipes. See their own "Original Authentic Italian Recipes Over 100 Years Old."  Also included is "100 Ways to Prepare Pasta". .
